Periodontal Disease Treatment (Deep Cleaning, Root Planing and Scaling)

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a bacterial infection of the gum tissue, periodontal ligament, and bone (the supporting structures of teeth) that results in bone loss. This bone loss will eventually cause tooth loss among the affected teeth, and it is the most common cause of teeth being lost in Americans. There are many risk factors for periodontal disease, including:

  1. Smoking,
  2. Oral hygiene,
  3. Genetics, and
  4. Grinding/ Clenching.
In addition, incidence and severity of periodontal disease is positively correlated with many diseases that we know of, including:
  1. Heart Disease,
  2. Cardiovascular disease,
  3. Diabetes,
  4. Pregnancy problems,
  5. Respiratory Disease, and
  6. Other Inflammatory Diseases
After thorough examination, Dr. Silvestro and his team will perform root planning/ scaling therapy to help arrest the disease process. During this procedure, the patient is numbed using a topical gel (no needle!), and a cleaning is completed below the gum line to remove the tartar deposits, bacteria, and bacterial toxins that cause the disease. Dr. Silvestro may also opt to place specially-designed antibiotics below the gum line, as well as have the patient use specific products at home to assist in the periodontal therapy and its success.
